Day 2 - Mt Lassen

Jill, Nathan and Joel drove up from Loma Linda on Wednesday just in time for our most strenuous activity, hiking to the top of Mt Lassen (10,451 ft elevation) in the evening in time to watch sunset from the summit, then hike down by moonlight (one day past full moon).

The drive to from Fall River Mills to Mt Lassen took about 90 minutes. We took along lots of water, snacks, many layers of clothing, and cameras. The parking lot at the Mt Lassen Summit Trailhead is around 8500 ft. During our 2000 elevation gain, we hiked up switchbacks, enjoyed the beautiful views of surrounding mountains and lakes, crossed several snow fields (we heard someone feel over 1500 feet down one and had to be evacuated a week earlier), stopped for snacks and photo opps and finally reached a stopping spot just below the summit.

There was plenty of time before sunset so some hiked over to another high area just to the west of the summit while the rest climbed the rock fall to the summit. Fortunately we took warm clothes and warm drinks; it was freezing on the summit and we had to wait almost an hour for the sun to go down. But it was worth it. (We saw several summiters with just shorts and tshirs, brrr!)

It was getting dark during the descent of the rock fall. Then due to a miscalculation of moonrise time, we waited for another hour for the almost full moon to rise giving us moonlight for the hike down. While we waited (with one other person who wasn't part of our group), we kept ourselves and him entertained by singing folk songs.

After the moon came up, we hiked down with headlamps, flashlights and then simply moonlight. There were at least a dozen hikers ascending in the moonlight. It was amazing how bright the moon shone, but there were still areas where lights were helpful. The drop off along the trail is quite steep.

I have so many pictures from various cameras. Will post a slideshow later. But for now, here are a few pictures.

Fall River Mills Decatholon

There's so much to do in the Fall River Mills area. Darla and Nathan had tshirts made with a list of planned activities. Between the nine adults, we accomplished all but whiffle ball.
  • Summit Mt Lassen (10,451 Ft Elevation
  • Golfing
  • Fly Fishing
  • Spelunking
  • White Water Rafting
  • Water Skiing
  • Horse Back Riding
  • Whiffle Ball
  • Wake Boarding
  • BBQing
Lots of pics to go through, so watch for a few slide shows.

Day 1 - Fall River

After Sunriver, our vacation continued in Fall River Mills in Northern California. We parked the RV at Nathan's parents home and headed to the river for an evening of fly fishing on Hat Creek.

The Fun Continues

Some pictures from our busy morning (see prior post).
We couldn't stop with only 4 activities on Monday. Headed to the pool for about an hour, which was so nice. I haven't done that in here at Stoneridge for several years.
During our drive on Sunday, we ran into a golf course that is only about 10 minutes from Sunriver, Quail Run Golf Course. The twilight rates start at 2 and are considerably less than the Sunriver courses ($35). So, we made a teetime for 3:45 and headed out.

The course was in nice shape and had a lot of character. Although the practice green was quite slow, the other greens were a bit speedier. The views of the mountains were lovely. But, no drink cart. What in the world!! They missed the boat on that one. And we both had a mixed round of good and bad shots, but that's golf. After the busy day, I was done for. We shared a giant burger at RJBs, then headed back for a nice soak in the whirlpool.

Potpourri of activity

This morning we made up for yesterday. Why are the good sports on TV in the summer? We spent most of the day Sunday watching the mens' finals at Wimbledon and the PGA tournament in Washington DC. Should have been outside enjoying the weather. We made it out for a bike ride in the morning, followed by mediocre Boba. In the afternoon, we drove out to Cultus, Wickiup, and Crane Prairie Reservoir to scope out future kayaking/camping opportunities.

But today...ran 45 minutes, played tennis for almost an hour and took a bike ride after our first day of pushups.

What the heck happened to the Hot Lava Baking Company in Sunriver. They used to make the best glazed donuts. So, we stopped at the end of our bike ride to pick up a few. NO...they don't even make glazed donuts anymore and to make matters worse, they don't take credit cards, only cash. Guess what? We probably won't be going there very often. Obviously under new ownership.

Road Trip

Our longest vacation ever started on July 3. Drove the RV to Sunriver after dropping the doggies at a Kennel in Bend. The RV will sit idle while we enjoy the 4th of July holiday weekend at the condo.

The 4th started with a long run and the inital 100 pushups test. We'll see if 100 pushups are achievable. The middle of the day was spent relaxing in the sun, reading and watching golf.

Went to a friend's house for a BBQ. They have a wonderful family and fun friends. It was a great time. We left the camera in the car, so no pics.

On Tuesday, we'll head south for a week of outdoor activity in Fall River Mills, CA followed by a road trip of unknown destination.

Finally finished this book. I don't understand Nora Robert's point of setting this mystery series in the future, but it was a quick vacation read.

Book Group Selection. Reminiscent of the movie Titanic except it was done well. Aged woman looking back on her life as a maid to a wealthy family in the early part of the 20th century. Mystery, love story, historical novel all wrapped up into one.

We got lost

We got lost on the way to a funeral, but found a couple minutes to take some pics.

In the yard...

Grand Floral Walk

Pat and I decided to take part in the Grand Floral Walk last Saturday. It is a 4 mile event that takes place immediately preceding the Grand Floral Parade during the Rose Festival.

The day started out rainy, but turned out to be a nice cool day for a walk. All in all, the 4 mile walk was closer to 9 miles with all the walked pre and post walk. There were some fun costumes along the way, too.
